Have you tried to outrun a cop lately? I certainly hope the answer is no! But if you have ever wanted to try, your chance is coming!

May 19, the Cape Coral Police Department will be hosting it’s annual Cape Cops 5k. The race is held in accordance with National Police Week. For those of you who may not know, in 1962, President Kennedy declared May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of those peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, have lost their lives or have become disabled in the performance of duty. Therefore the week in which May 15 falls was also designated as National Police Memorial Week. Each year during this time, a National Memorial is held in Washington D.C.

Proceeds from the Cape Cops 5k go to assist families of fallen and injured police officers within Lee County. Although we always hoped and prayed that we would never have a need to use these funds, the time came that we had to do so. Last year, one of our own, Officer Dave Wagoner was shot in the line of duty. We were able to provide assistance to Officer Wagoner’s family during this very stressful time.

This community event is also a great opportunity for our officers to have some healthy competition with our residents. As an added twist, you will be able to tell which runners on the course are police officers. So the question is, will YOU be able to outrun that cop? Come on out and find out! The race begins and ends at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The course offers scenic views of the surrounding neighborhoods. We will have a finish line party with refreshments, raffles and awards following the race. Each participant gets a bag chock full of goodies and a very nice dry fit running shirt!

The race is open to ALL skill levels. We have both running and walking divisions. Additionally, we have a short kids fun run following the race (FREE). Each child will receive a medal and a goodie bag.

For the second year in a row, the race is bring presented by Fuccillo Kia, so you know it’s going to be HUGE! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist :)
